There are around 204 valid Pterodactyl genera (types). Why does everybody call them Pterodactyls? In 1809, George Cuvier coined the term Pterodactyl, which comes from the Greek word for winged finger. The name caught on with the public before being renamed Pterodactylus in scientific journals. Because the Pterodactyl (Pterodactylus) was the first Pterosaur to be discovered, the popular name Pterodactyl now covers all Pterosaurs, whether in whole groups or as individual animals. When did the Pterodactyl live? The Pterodactyl (Pterodactylus) Pterosaurs first appeared in the late Jurassic Period 161.5 million to 145 million years ago. They became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period which began 145.0 million years ago and ended 66 million years ago. What were the Pterodactyl sizes? Pterodactyl sizes varied considerably between genera. Fossils of small, starling-sized Pterodactyls with wingspans of around 25 cm / 10 inches have been discovered, although these may have been juveniles rather than fully-grown adults. The largest Pterodactyls were the size of small aircraft, with wingspans of up to 11 m / 36 feet. Standing almost as tall as a modern giraffe, they were the largest flying animals ever to have lived. Where did Pterodactyls live? Pterodactyls are known as fish-eating animals that lived in coastal habitats, but they were found in several different habitats and would have had a variety of diets. Some Pterodactyls lived in forests; others swam. Just like modern birds, Pterodactyls evolved to fit into many different niches.
