This is a work of fiction, enrobed in uncomfortable realities. The first half of the 20th century was consumed by the horror of world wars, authoritarianism and destruction. The need for labour to reconstruct not just the infrastructure but all facets of life grew rapidly in the 1950’s. By 1958 recovery in Europe was extending to consumer and even luxury goods as demand from the needs of the ‘baby boomer’ generation started to grow. Programs like ‘Gastarbeiter’ (Guest Worker) in Germany brought in legitimate labour to help but were insufficient to prevent the rise of an underworld of slave trading and human trafficking. More than 100 years since its abolition, new rules and conventions were made in 1926 and again in 1957 to combat forced labour. But the lucrative business of transacting humans lived on in Europe and parts of Africa. Peter Wilson moved from London to the idyllic town of Annecy in the French Alps and undertook the mission to stamp out the problem at the root. The action takes place in France, Germany, Tunisia, Algeria, Mali and the Ivory Coast, at a time of significant political change in the French North Africa.
