A prosperous Cuban family fortunes begin to change as a result of tumultuous events of the 1950s-1960s. the family patriarch has provided his children with advanced educations in the United States and Europe. One son becomes a lawyer turned businessman and marries an independent minded school teacher and women's rights advocate. there life flourishes as they raise two children and participate in new social circles. Violent resistance begins against their nation's dictator Fulgencio Batista. The family supports Batista's downfall and celebrates his departure only to be dismayed by the rise of communism and a sycophant dictatorship. The rapid destruction of a modern western society provokes the couple's unexpected reaction reaction to the violent dictatorship of Fidel Castro. The rise of communism divides the family, creating a fissure which is at odds with their history of success. However, one converted family member does not abandon his familial ties and intervenes to to save family members from the regimes cruelty. The lawyer and his wife send their older child off to boarding school, but the second child is too young for such a solution so he is unintentionally drawn into the orbit of their activities. Ultimately, the family must flee their home for their safety and eventually flee their country for their lives. The story is told through the eyes of the child as the changes around him change his perspective of life. i am that child.
